What
is it? Just
as
professional driving instructors use dual-control vehicles, fonehelp
offers a
dual-control system
for its remote training. Thus
it is
possible both to monitor the student's progress and to
demonstrate mouse and keyboard activity with interactive feedback in
real time.
With your permission, we can share your screen, keyboard and mouse over
the internet! Remote
training
has the advantage that students can fit short lessons
into their work schedule with no travelling time. Memory retention is
easier from short lessons than from long ones. One-to-one
training is most responsive to personal needs and particular queries.
How
is it done? The
technology
used is Virtual Network Computing (VNC) developed by
Olivetti Research Laboratory and available free since they abandoned
the project in 1997. It has been imitated but never bettered by
various expensive proprietary programs such as PCanywhere from
Symantec, Remote Desktop and Remote Assist from Microsoft.. The version
from TightVNC
offers the best compression so works fastest over modem links. Security
is
easy: leave your VNC server locked off until you are talking to the
instructor and then "invite" him in. You have mouse and
keyboard
priority and your VNC is set to work by invitation only.
A
simultaneous
speech link is required, for which an ordinary
telephone works best, but if the student's only phone-line is used by
his modem, then "Yahoo Messenger" (free from here)
has been found to
use
the least bandwidth for this purpose. For this method the student needs
a soundcard, speakers, microphone and a free Yahoo account. It is slow
but workable.
